Right now the Panda page is accessible to anyone who connects to my server since there is a link to it on my home page (default.html). The webserver that I use will serve up any file in the Web Pages directory if the correct filename is given. Privacy of these files is assured by the inability of someone connected to my webserver to produce a directory of what files are available in the home directory, or any of its subdirectories.
I put patient information such as digital xrays, CT's, MRI's
etc on the server and email the URL to the patient so that they
can access their own data. Privacy is assured by chosing a folder
name of around 10 random letters and numbers which is highly unlikely
to be entered by mistake by some bored individual looking for
hidden files on my server. The same approach can be used to keep
all panda information private; I could create a directory Pandas,
and thus access to this directory would be via:
http://216.232.6.222/Pandas/default.html
I haven't done this yet, but if enough people want me to do it
I will.
Actually there is so much web content out there that this page has security through obscurity. I've only had about 10 people access this page in the month or so its been up, and no-one has fully explored all of the links.
